The Process…

silver maple log for slabs

A giant and decaying silver maple en route to its next incarnation.

The same silver maple, its history now laid bare.

It’s a quite a journey from tree to slab, and ushering it through the process is not for the faint of heart. Getting a technical tree on the ground may take days all by itself. Then there’s the puzzle of loading, hauling and unloading large chunks of wood, followed by milling, years of patience required for proper drying, and then slab flattening. We do it because a tree’s interior holds so many secrets. We do it because the deeper we go, the more we learn. We do it because it’s oh-so worth it.

Slabs rooted in place…

Tyler and Jen Quintano began Sand Creek Slabs as an opportunity to give North Idaho’s trees back to the community. In their work as arborists at Sand Creek Tree Service, the Quintanos must often remove stunning sentinels of Sandpoint’s storied history—walnuts, maples, cherries and elms—that have become too large or old to remain standing. The grain of these trees is the fabric of this place, woven with decades of snowpacks and summer squalls, sunlight and freezes, soil and decay. To revive the wood as a surface on which to live, kindles a greater communion with the landscape we call home.
